Your role

Do you have a passion for journalism and storytelling?

As a Cadet Journalist you will assist with the reporting and producing of news content for online, social, video and audio platforms. You will be trained and mentored by some of Australia’s top journalists to ensure the best support and development for your future and will be trained in a busy major metropolitan newsroom to equip you with the skills and experience you'll need to work in one of the regional bureaus once you have successfully completed your Cadetship.

During their cadet training year, the successful candidates will be working as part of the ABC News division in a Metro based newsroom. Our staff work in news and current affairs across radio, television, and digital media.

About you

ABC is not looking for specific qualifications within the media industry, but you will need to impress them with your passion, creativity and determination. You will be a self-starter, a team player, agile, flexible and willing to live and work in regional Australia. You will be enthusiastic about news, current affairs and all things digital, and be keen to connect with communities that are currently under represented at the ABC

If you also have the following attributes, then they encourage you to apply:

  • An enquiring mind with a passion for News, Sport and Digital journalism
  • Engagement with issues and how they affect communities and people
  • Well-developed research and writing skills
  • Good communication skills and a willingness to develop your presentation skills
  • Ability to work well in a team and take directions
  • Ideas on how to create authentic content that represents the broad diversity of Australia, reflecting a range of cultural and linguistic backgrounds and Indigenous communities

Benefits

The starting salary is approximately AUD 68,000 per year and includes an option for generous ABC superannuation of 15.4% on top of the base rate.

As a cadet, you will experience the following benefits:

  • Friendly and supportive environment
  • Be a part of Australia's independent national broadcaster
  • Access and attend events and activities across the year with specific mentor support
  • Support from the ABC's Diversity & Inclusion team

Career progression

For those that successfully complete the one-year training program, will be offered a position as a journalist in a regional bureau in the ABC. The offer may require the cadet to relocate.
