Ngochan Lam

I love that my role involves research because, while researching content for the blog I’m writing, I also learn things that can enhance my life, such as soft skills, job search tips, and industry insights.

What's your job about?

My name is Ngochan, and I’m currently a second-year student pursuing a Bachelor of Design at the University of Melbourne, with a major in both graphic and UX design. I was fortunate enough to secure a marketing internship at Fuse Recruitment this year before my graduation in 2025.

What's your background?

I grew up in Footscray, and one of the most important stages of my life was transitioning into a new career. When I first graduated high school, I didn’t have a good idea what I wanted to pursue so I studied the Bachelor of Biomedical Science as a good option to get into the health field. However, by the end of my degree, I decided that working in the health field wasn’t for me and that I was more interested in the arts of design. Thus, I switched careers and now I’m studying what I love and enjoying every moment of it. Throughout High School and University, I have consistently worked part-time jobs, and this aided in my ability to stay organised and take advantage of every moment. And maybe because I have continuously worked and secured different internships, I was able to receive an opportunity at Fuse Recruitment.

Could someone with a different background do your job?

My daily tasks vary each week, but I always start by writing top-talent content, which is Fuse’s way of showcasing candidates to companies. Once that’s done, I write blogs aimed at Fuse’s target demographic, typically content for graduates and job seekers. Other tasks include drafting social media schedules for the Future Insure Graduate Program on LinkedIn or brainstorming for content ideas.

My work is relatively simple to understand but involves a lot of writing which may take some time to develop and improve. What I’ve learnt at the internship is that blog writing is vastly different from the writing you usually do at school. There rarely needs to be a need for formal writing, rather you have to be very selective of your tone and choice of words to effectively capture your audience’s attention.

What's the coolest thing about your job?

I love that my role involves research because, while researching content for the blog I’m writing, I also learn things that can enhance my life, such as soft skills, job search tips, and industry insights. I also enjoy learning how to write better. This was a skill I didn’t think much about before starting the role, but it has become rewarding to discover that something I’ve written can impact others simply by using the right words and facts.

What are the limitations of your job?

This internship doesn’t come with a lot of responsibilities, as I don’t need to take work home. Plus, when I come in two days a week, I can usually complete the main tasks that need to be done. The only limitation is that the part-time nature of the role means I can’t work as much, which also limits the time I have to finish my assignments.

3 pieces of advice for yourself when you were a student...

My three pieces of advice for life are: First, always seize the opportunity in front of you, whether you think you deserve it or not. I applied for a marketing internship with little hope since I was majoring in Design, but to my surprise, I was accepted. Now, I’m learning new skills that could be beneficial to my future career. Second, always embrace failure and get back up. This was a tough lesson for me, but making mistakes is the best way to learn. Whether it’s in design or writing, the more you complete tasks quickly and learn from your previous work, the faster you’ll accelerate your growth rather than fear failure. Third, practice kindness. Everyone has their own stories and challenges, and to become a better person, always be mindful of what you say or do. Sometimes, small acts of kindness can make someone’s day.
