What's your background?
I grew up in Melbourne but moved to Mildura in 2020 due to the COVID pandemic. I finished high school there in 2021 and then moved back to Melbourne in 2022 to start university.
The most important stage of my life was when I started university. It was a whole new experience, especially living away from home for the first time. I stayed in student accommodation and got to face student life in a completely new environment. This period was crucial for me because I had to adjust to living on my own and managing everything by myself. It taught me a lot about responsibility and how to tackle challenges head-on.
What's your job about?
My supervisor manages the Infrastructure and Utilities department. My daily tasks involve helping with Bullhorn, which is the CRM Fuse use. A typical day includes checking emails, completing candidate profiles, and finishing reference checks. I use Bullhorn to update or change categories, manage client email lists, and create job ads for specific companies and roles. I particularly enjoy doing reference checks because I get to hear different perspectives from various referees.
Could someone with a different background do your job?
Even though it might sound complicated, the tasks I’m doing are actually pretty easy to grasp. This makes the internship great for people from all sorts of backgrounds since your existing skills can easily translate into recruiting.
What's the coolest thing about your job?
I have a lot of responsibility on the days I work, but I don’t have to take work home or work on weekends.
3 pieces of advice for yourself when you were a student...
Before starting an internship, I’d recommend doing a bit of research about the HR role, getting familiar with the systems used such as Bullhorn, and understanding the company’s goals. These advice would allow you to integrate smoothly with the team and its responsibilities.
