What's your job about?

I am rotating in the Tax team, which is a team that operates within three main spheres: wills and estates, tax advisory, and corporate governance for non-profits and charities. As a graduate lawyer, my role encompasses a wide array of responsibilities across these areas, aimed at providing me with comprehensive exposure and experience. On a typical day, I engage in diverse tasks such as crafting detailed tax advices, which involve staying up-to-date with the latest tax regulations and conducting thorough research to provide accurate guidance to our clients. Additionally, I often find myself drafting wills and codicils, where attention to detail is paramount to ensure our clients’ wishes are accurately documented and legally binding. Another significant aspect of my role involves contributing to governance documents for non-profits and charities. This could entail drafting policies, procedures, and Board Charters. An ordinary week might see me juggling multiple projects, from assisting a family in structuring their estate plan to advising a non-profit organization on tax-efficient strategies. Each project offers unique challenges and opportunities for growth, allowing me to continually expand my skill set and knowledge base. One fascinating aspect of my work is its tangible impact on individuals and organizations. Whether I'm helping a family secure their financial legacy or supporting a charity in fulfilling its mission, I find immense fulfillment in knowing that my contributions have real-world significance. This aspect of my job makes it deeply rewarding on a personal level.

What's your background?

I grew up in Melbourne, Australia, surrounded by its vibrant culture and diverse community. My journey through life has been marked by significant milestones that have shaped who I am today. After completing my early and secondary education, I pursued higher studies at Melbourne Uni before venturing to Bond University on the Gold Coast to complete my law degree. Throughout my career, I've explored various fields, including criminal and family law, gaining invaluable experiences along the way. These experiences have broadened my knowledge base and equipped me with a diverse skill set. Working in disputes and tax teams at large multinational firms provided me with exposure to complex legal matters and sharpened my problem-solving abilities. My journey eventually led me to my current role, which I've been enjoying for the past three months. The path to this position involved an enjoyable recruitment process, including interviews, networking nights and assessments. The journey was undoubtedly worth it, as I now find myself in a firm that aligns with my interests and allows me to make meaningful contributions. Throughout my personal and professional journey, I've learned the importance of resilience, adaptability, and continuous growth. I am grateful for the experiences that have brought me to where I am today and look forward to the adventures that lie ahead.

Could someone with a different background do your job?

Yes, individuals from various backgrounds could excel in this role. What's crucial for success is possessing traits like adaptability, attention to detail, and a hunger for learning. These characteristics ensure effectiveness within the team and in navigating the challenges of the job.

What's the coolest thing about your job?

The most fulfilling aspect of my job is guiding clients through the wills and estates portion of the practice. Assisting clients in planning for the future and ensuring their wishes are honored is something I have found rewarding and interesting. Interacting with diverse clients and aiding them in achieving their estate planning objectives is immensely rewarding, reaffirming that I'm making a meaningful difference in their lives.

What are the limitations of your job?

In my role, I bear significant responsibility for sourcing my own work, which can be both a challenge and an opportunity. While it allows me to build valuable networks and take ownership of my career trajectory, the lack of guidance can also pose limitations. Without clear direction, navigating tasks and career development can be daunting. Additionally, the autonomy comes with the pressure to constantly seek out opportunities for growth and advancement. For someone considering this role, the self-directed nature may be intimidating, requiring strong initiative and adaptability to thrive.
