Graduate program is all online teams meetings or modules, no formal training as of yet, apart from training specifically related to my business group
Graduate, Sydney - 10 Nov 2023
The graduate program only focusses on soft skills and is mostly delivered online in an unengaging format. There is no internal technical training. I have asked multiple times to do external training and have been unsuccessful each time. I have asked to do our internal project management training, as I am doing project management and have not been able to. I have been told that I am inpatient for wanting to do training.
Graduate, Perth - 10 Nov 2023
The grad program has been very informal, there doesn't seem to be any formal technical training which has left me feeling rather thrown in the deep end. Colleagues have been helpful and supportive, but not always very good at understanding my knowledge gaps and how to bridge them - sometimes it takes quite a bit of time to figure out what the gap is between where they're talking and what I know. Most of the formal grad program presentations have not really been useful to me; the project management ones have some useful information but the rest mostly rehash general business/life information/skills that I think most of us are pretty familiar with. I've tried attending lunch and learn or other information sessions whenever I can, but again I often struggle to understand anything because there's too significant a gap between my post-university knowledge and whatever specialised things they're talking about. I would really like some formal training or at least guidance on what technical skills we should be trying to pick up as grads in our respective areas. I have learnt some basics on protection and circuit breaker curves, how to model loads in Power CAD software, basic cable sizing and about short-circuit forces in substations. I feel like there are still huge gaps in my knowledge that make it difficult to use practically though.

I found the linked in training more useful to my role than the GHD internal training. The Word, Mural, Excel and PPT Linked in training modules have been great for allowing me to get things done. Hearing from other graduates, these tools are useful because they are not taught, or emphasised in school, University.

The graduate program has been like a hand to hold through the induction process into the company. I was immediately paired with a group that were also graduates but had more experience so they could guide me through any difficult situations. Each required skill has been carefully dissected and explained in a rational and approachable manner, making for simple learning.

So far the formal training has not been very good. My team is looking to create a new system for this though
Graduate, Perth - 06 Nov 2023
The graduate program has taken us through a number of high level concepts that prove useful, however it would have been good to learn these in a more practical sense. The grad program has been good to establish networks however it also would have been good to see more grad program sponsored social events to strengthen these networks. Informal training has been really strong within and beyond my team - if I've ever been unsure about something, a more senior person has always been keen to teach me what they can and emphasise that our learning is a key priority of theirs.

Would like to undertake more training.
Graduate, Other (Please specify) - Cairns - 03 Nov 2023
I transferred departments 1/2 way through my first year. both departments offered VERY different experiences. I received very minimal (if any) formal training in the first department I was in. I was being trained in the field by a graduate who had 3 months experience. Then I transferred and I had a senior shadowing me, then I really began to learn and thrive.

On the job training has been great. I have learnt heaps and am always noticing how much more I know now in just 1 year. The formal graduate program has been a mixed bag. Some of the sessions have been great while others have felt like a waste of time.

Formal training (such as the PM Training course) that I have been on have been good and useful. As has my on-the-job learning, which has been where I have learned the most by far. However, a large number of iConnect video eLearning's are overly long and have limited value or relationship to my work, in my opinion.
Graduate, Brisbane - 02 Nov 2023
Lots of opportunities for on the job training as well as other conferences, online training etc.
Graduate, Sydney - 02 Nov 2023
There is not much room for training as it is not chargeable work. I think it would be beneficial to invest more in training people how to do things correctly (especially field work)
Graduate, Brisbane - 02 Nov 2023
The formal training is pretty general, not job specific but it gives all the graduates and new starters a good idea of how the company operates. The on the job training has been great. There are a lot of seniors who are happy to teach you and help you develop your skills as long as you ask.
Graduate, Brisbane - 02 Nov 2023
It is harder to attend workshop events/ industry events without the level of experience other people have. It is always preferred for staff that are more senior to attend these events I feel. On the job training is minimal - you pick up most of this just by working on projects.
Graduate, Sydney - 02 Nov 2023
4WD training- organised and went on this very early in, which was great. Group has started drop in sessions, learning technical skills. Informal field training also happens, particularly with flora team
Graduate, Sydney - 02 Nov 2023
Most of the formal training is grad programs where they have people from different disciplines talk to us about topics. The other kind of training is like work done on projects but that is more like completing tasks as such. The best skills I have picked up so far is to do with report writing and admin tasks.
Graduate, Sydney - 02 Nov 2023
Almost all my training has come through chargeable work and getting experience. Have not really been provided any other training yet (besides nsw white card)
Graduate, Other (Please specify) - Newcastle - 02 Nov 2023
The company has good on the job training and I find it easy to reach out to people for help as there is always someone who can help and is willing to. I find past the few beginning sessions, the formal graduate development sessions have added little to no value.
Graduate, Brisbane - 02 Nov 2023
Graduate training is mostly fine, a few standout modules which were very helpful/useful (usually based on great speakers/presenters). Relevant job training is difficult to get funded.
