Clear progression outlined throughout from pre-application to getting the job. I have progressed from clerk to paralegal to graduate to lawyer. I have the opportunity to progress to Associate and Senior Associate in the coming years and potentially further if hitting KPIs.

Like most law firms, promotions in first few years is lock-step based on tenure. Beyond this they look at a variety of factors, but importantly billable hours are only one factor.

Once a grad has settled in the team, it takes 2 years to become an associate. promotions are not only based on billable hours, but how well rounded you are as a person while taking into account personal circumstances.

You start as a graduate for roughly 6 months before being admitted as a lawyer. You are then lockstep progression to associate after roughly 2-3 years. Anything beyond this is merit-based and assessed on a combination of billable hours and other qualitative items.

Each year you have the opportunity to review your performance one on one with your supervising partner and discussing your work and growth with them. For the first two years you are on lockstep with your graduate cohort and then have the opportunity to apply for an associate position and afterwards a senior associate position. This information is systematically provided to you, and you can regularly check in with your billable targets and progress with senior fee earners. There is a consistent and clear system for career progression and increased remuneration.

Promotion is very limited by the lock step despite lateral flexibility. Does not matter at our level how we perform, and no incentives to work harder to progress.

To be honest I don't know much, or more accurately have not been paying much attention. This is because I have only just started with the company and am focusing more on doing my job well than looking into future opportunities. But from my place I can see potential progression paths that I could travel from my current place and know that my manager would do whatever they could to support my in achieving my goals.

Throughout the hiring and training process all the new clerks were presented with the career progression plan at the firm. It seems that these are obtainable positions with reasonably well articulated criteria for attaining these positions.

Associate is automatic 3 years PAE, and after that is merit based. Very clear guidelines and support provided from Talent and supervisors if thats your goal
