Management at MinterEllison

8.7
8.7 rating for Management, based on 33 reviews
How accessible are managers and do they make good mentors? You may want to address internal communication, performance feedback or praise and recognition.
Open-door policy which is conducive to feedback and questions. Regularly scheduled formal performance review / goal setting sessions. Potentially room for further informal feedback

Managers are generally accessible, responsive to emails and many leave office doors open and are happy to be engaged for a chat. The firm has dedicated feedback arrangements and these seem to mostly be taken up by management.

Very accessible. All levels of seniority are open to answering questions. In DR and in all areas, you are allocated a buddy and a mentor. a buddy assists you in settling in the team and a coach helps you will career progression. Everyone in the team makes sure to give credit where credit is due and approaches learning opportunities in a diplomatic way.

Partners are very accessible and you often are able to work directly on matters with them. Senior lawyers are also very available and you will have a significant amount of direct contact with them.

My managers have been very approachable and supportive, Mel the Insurance partner is available for one-on-one discussions in her office at any time and Jessie the senior associate in health disputes enjoys a coffee with her team each morning where we discuss all things both personal and professional which builds a very approachable nature for both providing and receiving feedback.

Managers are very accessible and good mentors. For the most part, the leaders are great at providing knowledge feedback and soft skills training. Also very committed to recognising juniors' achievements.

My manager is amazing, I could not have asked for a better person to be leading me each day. She is very accessible either by call or text. She always has feedback for me, and it is shared in a very positive way. We have regular one to one meeting where we talk about anything that I feel I want to talk about. She encourages progression and learning.

I always receive positive, encouraging and useful feedback from my mentors.
Summer Clerk/Casual Paralegal, Perth - 07 Nov 2023
Managers at MinterEllison are very accessible. All partners have an open door policy and are always happy to make time to speak to junior lawyers. There is also a company culture around coffee catch ups whereby senior lawyers of teams you may be interested in are happy to grab a coffee and chat about their work and the team. Partners are less likely to give direct feedback, however more junior lawyers certainly fill this space, always happy to provide advice and mentorship

Varies significantly between teams.

Very dependent on specific managers - some are fantastic mentors, others won't even acknowledge juniors.

Good mentors, plenty of support

My managers are approachable and I always feel as though I can ask questions regarding changing my usual working days/ if I needed to take a day off (as I don't have leave as a paralegal). There are definitely people who stand out as good mentors. Others I would say that mentorship is not their strength - but that's ok, it's not everyone's cup of tea. I know there are formal feedback structures set up but as a paralegal I have not been involved. I've never received any formal feedback. The best way I have found to get 'feedback' is to be cc'd on work that you have contributed to when it goes out. Unfortunately, this is not common practice by all seniors in the team I'm in so its been a little difficult to see how my work contributes.

Internal communication and mentoring is good. More feedback and regular check-ins would be beneficial.
Graduate, Melbourne - 16 Oct 2023
Mentoring and communication are great. Feedback is quite good during organised feedback sessions, but I think more real-time feedback would be valuable.
Graduate, Brisbane - 13 Oct 2023
Structured feedback mechanisms in place, people are approachable so can ask for feedback.

It varies from partner to partner, team to team. There are some partners that take a vested interest in juniors and are generous with their time. Others are more client-focused and can be a little harder to connect with.

Amazing, super responsive (instant actually) and always making time to answer my many questions. My supervisors are always in the office and I love having them nearby in case I have any queries. My supervisor, Talent and buddies all make time to sit down for an hour with me over coffee to check in on me. Once I had an emotional response to some triggering work I was reading, and as soon as they found out, they immediately jumped into action and put in boundaries that I was hesitant to put in place, and constantly checked in on me after that to ensure I was doing okay. The Partner was particularly hands on and understanding. They booked me in for EAP, organised more trauma training with Talent, sent me lots of resources and reviewed my workload.

Partners and senior lawyers are very generous with their time. It is normally incumbent on you to reach out for feedback or with questions, but they will always answer any questions or provide detailed feedback when asked.
