How flexible is your company when it comes to hours?
Relatively flexible
Lawyer, Sydney - 03 Sep 2024
Very flexible. Can work from home in most circumstances. Can miss time for personal appointments and make-up in other ways or take personal leave.

The nature of the work is that there are busy and less busy periods. Even during busy periods, most days are within reasonable and predictable hours. There are occasional instances where longer hours may be required unexpectedly. Generally, the team and leadership are very accommodating of some variations to hours where staff need to attend appointments, e.g. doctor's appointments. However, my experience is that it is best as a junior to conform to the hours worked by the other team members to ensure best opportunities for learning and availability to assist, so I have not sought flexible hours which are outside the normal scope.

9-6. Nothing crazy on average but the odd evening where I will stay back to 7-9 (quite rare).

Very flexible. Although we work hard, the team is understanding and is flexible in terms of taking time off if I'm sick or have appointments or need to work from home.

The after-hours culture is also great, with everyone being respectful of your personal time. There is no expectation that you stay late for the sake of it, although it is common to work later hours when there is a transaction on or very urgent work, however this is an exception rather than the norm.

I feel comfortable leaving before 6:30pm as per the legal services award.

Generally work between 8.30 and 6pm, which works well. Good flexibility for medical appointments.

The days I spend in the office are mostly up to my own discretion. Aside from ensuring I am in for at least 2 days as is requested by the company when possible. I love that I have the freedom to determine if I wish to work in or out of office on any given day.

Hours are flexible if you need them to be. But I work 9:00am to 5:00pm.

My team is extremely flexible with hours, as well as WFH days.
Summer Clerk/Casual Paralegal, Perth - 07 Nov 2023
Work hours are very flexible, for instance I can flow very easily between home and the office at my discretion. While hours can be long, that is to be expected in the industry and MinterEllison does a great job of balancing this with available work from options

Very flexible. I am able to complete university and work with no difficulties.
Graduate, Adelaide - 16 Oct 2023
I often work a little longer than ideal but I am usually happy to do so as the work I am doing is fulfilling. The team is relatively flexible with hours.
Graduate, Melbourne - 16 Oct 2023
I usually coming in between 8 and 8:20 and leave at 5pm. Unless there was something that I was working on that needed to be sent out that day. I always feel as though I can leave at 5pm. This has been great as i can manage my time afterwork for exercise/uni very efficiently. Although I am expecting this to change when I start grad rotations (as I don't always get to 7 hrs on my InTapp timesheet - the new firm policy does not apply to paralegals).

Minters is flexible. Can go home and work if required.

Again - variability depending on team. Some teams allow working from home more than others. I think the firm could benefit by adopting a more consistent approach across the whole cohort, rather than being team or partner dependent. I think generally, hours are reasonable, with there obviously being an expectation on busy days to exceed your hours and work late, but equally there being allowance on quieter days to relax a little and leave on time.

Standard 8.30-5pm usually, with the rare late night on my own volition (all my colleagues check in and tell me to go home, but sometimes I'm just on a roll and want to finish). Very flexible, if I need to leave early, I can arrive early and if I have an appointment or arrive late, I can make up hours later. I love the flexibility and acknowledgement that we have lives outside the office. I do a lot of extra curriculars and advocacy work so I really appreciate the firm's support to allow me to pursue my other non-law interests

Overall number of hours is alright, but it can be a bit inflexible at times - it can be challenging to fit in unavoidable 'life admin' tasks and appointments which can only be done during business hours. At least in the teams I have worked in, there does not seem to be any settled approach/ procedure for brief absences (say 1-2 hours). This is further impacted by the requirement to have 7 hours on each timesheet (which I understand the rationale behind, but in my view reinforces inflexible working arrangements).
