Informal: great learning from others, especially my manager in 2nd rotation who gave lots of good advice
Formal: hit or miss. Online ones were super boring like a lecture, but in person ones were generally great. If the content in person wasn't that good, at least there were other grads to chat with and have fun.

General and specific training (eg. for economists, analysists, accountants).
Broad range of useful training from 'writing for government' to 'stakeholder management'. And specifics such as the use of data warehouses.

The L&Ds have been great overall. Only minor comment would be to have more industry/skill specific ones for the non-generalist streams. These are very valuable.

The grad program provides Learning and Development workshops throughout the year. I really enjoyed the workshops on public policy and stakeholder engagement. They were tailored to the VPS and the presenter was really engaging. The more generic workshops like leadership and resilience were less useful. DEECA also provided some excursions which were really interesting.

Formal trainings are decent and cover a broad range of introductory topics for government work. Some are quite meaningless given many grads are recently finished uni and are well equipped to learn more in depth than the sessions were able to provide

Some of the training has been really interesting and engaging, such as the sessions on policy and stakeholder engagement. Others have been a bit boring and hard to concentrate on because they've been a bit too theoretical and irrelevant to my work. I've also preferred the in-person sessions rather than online because it's harder to chat with other people or even just focus on the content.

There are a number of mandatory online and in-person Learning and Development workshops over the course of the program. Most of these are really insightful, and you will not be assessed on your observations. There are of course optional learning workshops always on offer that can be found on your department's intranet.

The training is a big selling point of this program but in reality has been highly generic. This is an aspect of the program I would love to see improved.

The grad program has had a series of formal training sessions including some whole day sessions at Melb Uni Business School which have been great. there are lots of informal sessions that you can sign up to and we have access to on demand learning and Linkedin learning options
