Working Hours at Victorian Government

Great thing about working in the public sector is I am able to work flexible hours.

Hours extend beyond typical working hours but this is not a requirement. Flexibility is offered to enable a balanced work-life set.

Flexibility has been amazing amongst the departments.

Great flexibility. Come in the office whenever, but it's good to get in to learn from other people. Generally 2-3 days is the norm, but not uncommon for some people to only come in once a week. Any less than that and you forget people exist.

I am relatively satisfied but personally would prefer a 2 day in the office set up rather than 3 days. However, the team is pretty flexible when it comes to this.

Each team has their own pattern, but usually working in the office at least 1 or 2 days per week, sometimes more. Up to you how often you come in above the minimum.

I usually work 9-5, with maybe an extra hour in busy times. Work is flexible when I need to attend appointments.

I am mostly satisfied. I usually work 2 days from home and 3 from the office. I am able to take time off for appointments without using sick leave. I enjoy this flexibility, but I wish more people came into the office. Often there are only one or two people that come in. When I rotated to another department my team always came in and it was so good for morale. We got coffees in the morning and often had team lunches. It really improves job satisfaction. As a young person, I enjoy coming in and socialising. I also don't have a good work from home set up so I prefer coming into an office space.

All my managers have allowed me to work flexibly, both in terms of where and when I work. I can work earlier if I want to make up for needing to get away early or want to take a longer lunch break. I'm able to work around my lifestyle.

Vic Gov is really flexible in understanding flexible working arrangements. The initial discussion with managers may feel a little bit uncomfortable, especially for graduates who feel they may not have much bargaining power, though the pay off is worth it to be able to support your unique working requirements. There is a growing movement to allow flexibility with in-office expectations, as some cannot faithfully meet the 3 day requirement.

Flexibility can vary a little team to team throughout the rotations, but I have typically been able to have flexibility in hours (eg. 8am-4pm) to assist in a better work life balance. Typically are able to work 2 days a week from home.

The ESC and broader Victorian Government is very flexible with work hours, with some teams utilizing anchor days, while others prefer to choose days on an ad hoc basis.

Pretty flexible. As long as you work your hours and get everything done you can do it in the hours that work for you. Working from home 3 days a week.

Some departments are very flexible, some less so.
