I was drawn by the numerous opportunities available at Service Stream across the entire business, which is ideal for someone like me who wants to explore different fields. Having worked for the company for 2 years while I was studying, I appreciated the company culture and wanted to continue growing here.

I am a site-based graduate engineer.

What’s your background? (Tell us about yourself)

I am a Chinese international student who moved to Melbourne after high school. I completed my bachelor's degree and worked for 2 years in a small manufacturing/construction company. Afterwards, I completed my master’s degree at the University of Melbourne before joining Service Stream’s graduate program. In my free time, I enjoy gaming, comics, and cooking.

How have your studies helped you in your current role?

My engineering-focused education has instilled a curiosity in me to understand and investigate anything that seems unreasonable or doesn’t make sense. This approach helps me identify the root causes of issues and spot critical factors in my work.

What are you passionate about in your role?

I love the practical aspect of my role, where every decision I make has a direct and quick impact on outcomes. This instant feedback motivates me to perform better and always be proactive about potential issues.

What is something exciting you are currently working on?   

I am working on a major oil pipeline relocation, which is a challenging project that involves liaising between asset owners, clients, unions, and other stakeholders with varying levels of interest, all while ensuring compliance with technical standards.

How would you describe the culture for a Graduate at Service Stream?   

It is a very supportive environment; there is always someone available to answer my questions, and I can feel the expectations and trust of others. Additionally, Service Stream provides opportunities to speak with senior management to understand the focuses of people at different levels of management.

What has been the most empowering moment in your Graduate Journey at Service Stream so far?

The most empowering moment was when I was on site and encountered a conflict between the client's direction and the technical standards I had previously identified. The team was stuck and sought my opinion. I provided a clear and effective solution, and it felt great to see that people started to trust me.

How does Service Stream help support you as a Graduate in building the foundations of your career?

Service Stream has been instrumental in supporting me as a Graduate, providing extensive support from experienced professionals. They have helped me understand how to build my reputation and network within the business. Through this, I have not only gained technical skills but also developed a broad understanding of project management.

What have you gained so far from working at Service Stream as a Graduate?

In my first 3 months of the rotation, I have not only learned technical knowledge but also developed project management and an understanding of the roles and responsibilities of each team member to better fit in as an engineer.
