  • 1,000 - 50,000 employees

Zach Li

It always feels motivated that I can bring what I have learnt in the business area from my previous rotation to the current delivery team.

What was it that interested you to apply for a career at Service Stream initially?

The Graduate Program offered by Service Stream allows me to rotate between different sectors within 2 years. In my view, it is important to get exposed to a few other areas in the engineering industry where I can figure out what interests me the most in at early career.

What's your current role at Service Stream?

Graduate Engineer in the Structures & Corridors team at ConnectSydney.

What’s your background? (Tell us about yourself)

I finished my bachelor’s degree in civil engineering and my master’s degree in project management both at UNSW. After graduation, I worked for around one year in a manufacturing company and started the Graduate Program last year. My first rotation was in the Business Management Team at ConnectSydney.

How have your studies helped you in your current role?

Time management - Like there are multiple courses in one semester, there are always a few projects/tasks happening at the same time. I gained knowledge about prioritising my time on urgent and important tasks, then non-urgent, non-important tasks.

Multi-tasking - There are always ad-hoc tasks every day. My ability to distribute time across different projects is improving yearly. It does not have a “final exam” for the work, but I manage to finish things in an acceptable and reasonable outcome that satisfies the customer.

What are you passionate about in your role?

In my current role, I have been allowed to explore the world of bridge projects. In the previous 3 months, I gained a better understanding of the project cycle. I got involved in discussions with consultants, subcontractors, and suppliers, which is significantly essential to developing communication skills.

What is something exciting you are currently working on?

There is not a specific big project that I am currently working on, but I always contribute to my team daily. It always feels motivated that I can bring what I have learnt in the business area from my previous rotation to the current delivery team.

How would you describe the culture for a Graduate at Service Stream?

The culture helps a Graduate to grow quickly during the program. Various businesses in Transport, Utility, and Telco provide options for graduates to choose what they want to pursue in early career.

What has been the most empowering moment in your Graduate Journey at Service Stream so far?

I was able to take responsibility and share the workload with a colleague when that colleague was needed for other projects for the short term.

How does Service Stream help support you as a Graduate in building the foundations of your career?

We graduates met together during the annual O-Week in early February. During the O-Week, we were allowed to know each other and know different sectors at the Service Stream. Managers who are in charge of the Graduate Program organise the Evolution Series, and Graduate Project, as well as other catchups with all of us.

  • Skills to communicate with people from various backgrounds.
  • Technical skills and software to assist with tasks.

What are 3 words you'd use to describe Service Stream as an employer?

Caring, organised, and innovative.
